Get your (pregnant) glow on!

Is prenatal exercise REALLY so important?

Are you pregnant and having difficulty finding the motivation to exercise? Keep reading to see how exercise can help you get that “pregnancy glow” that everyone seems to be talking about!

It can be difficult to motivate yourself to exercise at the best of times, and this can prove even more challenging when you’re pregnant. As you’ve most likely noticed, your body is undergoing a huge amount of change in order to accommodate the growth and development of your baby. As amazing as this process is, many of these symptoms can be quite uncomfortable and have a large impact on the way you are feeling day-to-day. Some more challenging symptoms can include; new aches and pains, bowel/bladder symptoms and reduced energy/sleep.

BUT, not to worry. There is ample evidence that prenatal exercise, performed safely and effectively, can alleviate these symptoms and lead to improved health outcomes for newborns and mums.  Exercise is not only beneficial physically, but can also be a wonderful way to meet other Mums-to-be.

So, we’re told that prenatal exercise helps… but HOW does it help?

  1. Strengthens supporting muscles, allowing your body to adjust to rapidly changing load and prevent pain/symptom progression.

  2. Releases endorphins that help to improve energy levels and sleep quality.

  3. Improves strength and endurance of the pelvic floor, improving bowel and bladder symptoms, leaving you feeling more controlled, comfortable and confident.

…and this is just to name a few.

Of course, it is always important to consult a health professional before taking part in prenatal exercise. Our women’s health Physiotherapist, Lydia Barlow, is an expert on prenatal assessment and exercise prescription, and would be delighted to walk you through the next 9 months, one step at a time.
